The water supply systems that we employ are maintained at a significant pressure level to enable the water to flow from the supply to the demand. When pressure fails or is reduced due to a water main burst, frozen pipe or an unexpectedly high demand on the water system, the pressure in the pipes may drop and allow contaminated water from in or around the supply to be drawn into the system. Undesirable contaminants may also enter your potable water piping through what is called “back pressure.” The sources of back pressure vary, they may be pumps in the water distribution system, boilers or heat exchanging equipment and even power washing equipment in these situations you face a constant risk of overcoming the static water pressure in the plumbing. When utilizing chemicals, for commercial and industrial De-scaling of boilers or residential for cleaning of decks or siding with a power washer, having a back flow preventer would greatly benefit you.

A back flow preventer comes in a variety of forms, but most common and trusted is a Double Check Valve Assembly (DCVA) or Atmospheric Vacuum Breaker (AVB) which will protect your drinking water from harmful chemicals and bacteria carried in the back flow. Back flow problems can cause series of dangerous outcomes form bacterial disease, poisonous pollutants, to full on explosions all of which warrant the installation of a black flow preventer. The following is a short list of common problems associated with back flow issues:

Pressure

The water mains are constantly maintaining their certain pressure it is this pressure that forces water through the pipes and to the faucets. When that pressure is compromised by a stronger opposing pressure, it causes unsanitary water to enter the system and contaminate the supply.

Siphoning

Siphoning can happen to anyone and commonly occurs when the pressure of the water supply has an abrupt reduction creating a vacuum, which forces soiled and polluted water to be sucked back up the pipe often times from the sewage lines or septic tank.

Garden Sprinklers

Back flow can cause one of the greatest risks to your water safety when your lawn or garden is equipped with an in-ground sprinkler system. The danger is so serious that some states have made the installation of back flow preventers for sprinkler systems law. The reason is simple we put a heavy amount of fertilizer and pesticides on our lawn and gardens, when a back flow occurs it carries all those pollutants into the primary water supply essentially poisoning the water and who ever drinks it. Many times the victims do not realize this has occurred until after ingesting the water, this exposure is especially dangerous for the young and elderly.

Our planet maintains a constant total water volume through the Earth’s hydro logic cycle, the physical processes of evaporation, condensation, precipitation, infiltration, runoff, and subsurface flow. Although the Earth’s water balance remains fairly constant, only about 1% of the water on the planet is accessible for human consumption, this would be our fresh water supply, or surface and ground water which is tapped for most of our water needs. The remaining water is, for the most part, salt water stored in the Earth’s oceans. There are other sources of fresh water such as glaciers and polar ice caps but access to these resources are limited and costly. Increasing climate changes and population shifts can cause dramatic reductions in our fresh water supply straining surface and ground water resources, without an abundant water supply to continuously feed our demand, amenities like indoor plumbing which consists of showers, sinks and sewage lines would not be available to us. Also, many people don’t understand the vital importance water plays in our electricity production, US power plants consume more water every year than all the US agriculture industries combined, requiring staggering amounts of water to cool the nuclear reactors as well as Cole and other power plant facilities. This produces waste water that is contaminated by minerals and chemicals that were used to treat the water prior to entering the cooling system and collects additional deposits as it cycles through the system, this water is regularly introduced back into the main water supply in states such as Pennsylvania who is experiencing a natural gas boom. Economic rewards often over shadow the environmental dangers, however, the environmental effects of these policies are still being investigated and future policies will hopefully be devised in reflection the results. Without water we have no indoor plumbing and no electricity, the results would be devastating increasing the cost of everything in our lives. How much does your job rely on electricity? Think of all the impact this will have on life as we know it.

Water conservation is pivotal in our efforts to sustain life on Earth. Using simple water conservation techniques we can help sustain fragile ecosystems and reduce the demand for water, allowing time for our aquifers, rivers and streams to raise their water levels and maintain adequate levels of flow. Plus as an added bonus it saves you money each month on your utility bill. A few of the simplest and most effective water saving practices that you can employ in your home are provided here, for more information do a quick internet search for “conserving water in the home.” In the meantime here are five wasteful water culprits.

Leaks. Check water fixtures, appliances and irrigation systems for leaks.

Out of date toilets. An old toilet is probably the biggest water consumer in your home.

Out of date washing machines. Old laundry machines are the second largest water waster in the home. Modern models use 35%-50% less water and 50% percent less energy per load.

Plants. Consider the climate conditions in your area and select plants appropriately.

Unnecessary irrigation. Make sure your garden or lawn needs the water you’re giving it, this is how most water is wasted in the yard. When watering by hand use a timer to alert you that its time to move the water promptly.

Remember that not all of your laundry loads will need the same amount of water, smaller loads require less water to clean and adjusting the load size on your washing machine is practically effortless and can save you dollars by the gallon over a short period of time.

You can also install a flow restriction on faucet sinks by removing the aerator, and installing the restrictor inside. It is recommended that you remove any mineral deposits that may have accumulated by scrubbing it with an old toothbrush or a small wire brush, if during the removal or cleaning you damage the aerator, just replace it, you can find one at your local hardware store. Insert the flow restriction screen into the aerator and reinstall the aerator. Installing a flow restriction in a shower head is a similar procedure.

Installing an electronically controlled irrigation system can pay for itself in the money you save in your utility bill every month. The simplest and most affordable timers will reduce over watering and technology has made leaps and bounds over the years, now you can purchase new weather based controllers that evaluate weather conditions and only water when nature won’t.

It can take several seconds to almost a minute for hot water to reach the faucet being used, depending on the temperature setting of the hot water heater and its distance from the faucet, in the meantime cold water is being wasted. Collect the water and use it to water plants and pets.

Motion activated faucets switch the water on and off using sensors or detectors saving water by dispensing it only when needed, cutting the water off that you would normally keep running as you scrub your hands or dishes , once you’re ready to rinse it kicks back on. These are great for commercial bathrooms, but most people don’t see a use for them in residential bathrooms because of the high price of the units, but a similar and more affordable alternative would be a pedal activated valve which has easy installation is equally effective in water conservation.

Turn lights off when you are not in the room, unplug electrical appliances like TVs, stereos, and power stripes that provide power to numerous things you are not using at the moment. By reducing your electricity usage you by reflection reduce the water demand. Install energy efficient light bulbs, seal areas of your home that cause heat loss. You can install weather stripping in places like gaps in the doors and cover windows with curtains, blankets or plastic and lower your thermostat to cut down on energy usage. Some people will think your weird for turning the lights off all the time but keep your focus on the bigger picture and educate people on why you do it; eventually someone will recognize your genius and you will inspire them to do the same, if not for the environment, then for their wallets.

When you think about getting your ideal home situated people generally tend to focus on the living room, the kitchen and the bedrooms because these are areas people will be spending the majority of their time, this state of mind tends to leave the bathrooms slightly neglected. Aside from the fact that 90% percent of your household guests will use the restroom in your home, there are many reasons to pay closer attention to your facilities. The dangers of neglecting them cannot be over emphasized. Some of the worst household disasters come from the bathrooms or bathroom related plumbing, they are expensive and often extremely stinky sticky situations that can be avoided with proper maintenance and the installations of particular safe guards and even whole new units. What looks like a small leak can turn into a massive excavation that can mean anything form tearing out walls to tearing up your lawn and although our Denver Master Plumbers can assist you in any situation, they will be the first to tell you that they would much rather assist you in preventing a problem than in fixing one after it has reached critical mass. Here at No Problem Plumbing and Drain our plumbers are some of the highest trained technicians in the industry today and are fully equipped to deal with any situation and they have the skills and experience to use them properly. Our goal is not related to the bottom-line, we base our business success on our customer satisfaction and it is this mentality that has earned the trust and respect of thousands of local Coloradoans and because we service all of the metro area there is no job too big or too small.

We also encourage environmental conservation, so whenever we provide a service or a quote on site, we will provide you with cost effective energy saving tips that will help you save money and conserve natural resources that our great state needs. We encourage you to turn the water off when you are washing your hands or dishes in between cleaning whenever possible, the slight inconvenience of having to turn on and off the water go a long way towards water conservation. Power companies, particularly Nuclear Power Plants, are one of the leading users of our fresh water supplies in the US so by turning off your lights and keeping the fridge closed whenever you are not in it is another great way to save on water. Replacing old appliances is becoming a vital way to reduce your demand on our natural resources, the design and construction of these devices allow the use of less water for washing and less electricity for operating, reducing the demand both directly and indirectly. Our Denver Master Plumbers can provide you with several options concerning low flow toilets and ways to increase your water efficiency. Please contact No Problem Plumbing and Drain today, so together, we can help make a better tomorrow.

Few people understand what a back flow preventer, a back flow certification, and the value of these things actually are. There are a half a dozen or so different types of back flow preventers. Their purpose is to guard against unsanitary and potentially deadly water from entering our drinking water systems. Many state and local governments have made back flow preventers a mandatory requirement for certain types of structures such as office buildings, apartment builds, condominiums, hotels and must be recertified annually as directed by the Safe Drinking Act and Rule.

NoProblemPlumbingandDrain, is an established state-certified backflow preventer company. Our licensed backflow prevention technicians are capable of installing, testing, and certifying backflow preventers in Denver, Englewood, Westminster and neighboring areas. Keeping accurate records is a critical part of a successful backflow prevention program and that is exactly what the service department of NoProblemPlumbingandDrain provides.

Backflow Certification Process:

The process usually starts when the property owner receives a letter from the city that tells them that they have to install a backflow or certify the ones currently installed. The property owner calls NoProblemPlumbingandDrain, we then send out a licensed backflow technician to install or certify the backflow preventer system, after which we file and submit all of the proper paperwork for the city. At that time the property owner is automatically enrolled in our backflow program and will be notified each year by a NoProblemPlumbingandDrain representative who informs them it is time to recertify their backflow system. If a backflow device does not pass inspection, the customer is given a quote to either repair or replace the backflow system.

At first glance a swimming pool appears simple enough it has a supply to transport inflow water and a drain for water outflow with a few additional mechanical pieces that people hardly even notice. Naturally you might assume that the maintenance needed to sustain it would be simple too, but looks can be deceiving and pool maintenance can be a daunting task to any one not equipped to deal with the job before them. Fear not, for within the words displayed before you, lay simple chores that can spare you barrels of burden and grant seasons of problem free entertainment, simple chores like cleaning the pool baskets, filters and routine maintenance on the pump go a long way towards extending your pool life.

The primary enemy of your pool function is debris, which makes its way into the pool parts. Your water filter is your primary defense against this typically you will find one of three types of filters: sand, cartridge or a diatomaceous earth filter. Each one requires various steps to clean properly.

A sand filter is just a large canister of special purpose sand containing sharp edges that separate debris from the water. Cartridge filters use a pleated filter element which catches large particles of debris in pores covering the surface and use the larger debris to filter the finer particles like a screen. A diatomaceous earth (DE) filter contains a porous powder that traps debris as water passes through it, the particles in the powder act like a sponge to absorb the debris.

Before cleaning any filter you have to be able to determine the appropriate time to do so. Most manufacturers will list the various specifications that their filters have, but it is usually a good idea to clean the filter when the pressure gauge on it reads 10 psi over its normal operating level. If you use a sand filter or a DE filter backflush water through them as routine maintenance replacing sand filters every three to five years and DE filters every three to four months. Cartridge filters are my personal choice, simply flush the filter with a garden hose and soak it in a cleaning solution and you’re good to go but I like to keep a second cartridge so I can rotate them out and not lose pool time.

Keep the skimmer basket clean which is located underneath a cover on the pool deck. This basket is designed to capture floating debris preventing it from reaching other critical components, without routine cleaning which can mean daily during heavy use, the basket gets clogged causing the rest of the pool components to have a harder time maintaining their proper functions. A swimming pool pump is reminiscent of impeller-driven pumps which operate in a similar manner, the electric power motor spins an impeller disk mounted with curved vanes creating negative pressure in the lines as the vanes rotate drawing water from the intake source to the pool through the discharge port. When backflushing sand filters most of them will have instructions specific for that unit, look for a multiport valve on the top or body of the unit when it is present the various functions will be stated on the dial section, just turn the dial to “backwash,” and switch the pump on for about 10 minutes.

If you use a DE filter you want to disassemble the DE filter and clean the grids during the beginning of each season, to do this shut off the circuit breaker to the pump and bleed your system at the pressure relief valve before you remove the top of the unit once you do this remove the top of the filter grid.

Have you ever experienced a mainline back up? If you have then you know how horrible of an experience that can be, if you haven’t well then count yourself lucky, here at NoProblemPlumbingandDrain we have seen, felt and smelled the worst of them. In the event you become a victim of a mainline back up or you decide to avoid that fate and take a proactive approach to circumvent it all together, consult with one of our Denver Master Plumbers. Take it from us, we would rather go out to prevent a problem than to repair one, so we implore you to make that quick and easy call to schedule a Mainline Inspection or Mainline Cleaning to ensure your sewer pipes are in good working condition. We provide both residential and commercial service and are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to meet your needs as they arise.

We equip our Denver Plumbers with top of the line equipment and training. They will have all the tools they need to resolve any plumbing issue both quickly and accurately, from common snaking, jetting and sewer video inspections to complete sewer line installation or repair. Snaking a drain or line is one of the most common practices in the plumbing industry involving inserting a cable into the pipes to clear any debris that may be clogging the line. Water Jetting utilizes high pressured water to essentially blast the line clearing it of any build up of sludge, grease, hair and any other debris. For those hard to reach or highly concealed issues that may arise in your main sewer line we employ Video Scoping, or simply put a sewer camera to trace the lines and identify any trouble areas that may be buried or deep in the system.

Once the problem is detected then we will be able to take the necessary steps to repair or replace your sewer line to get it back in good operating condition. Our Denver Master Plumbers refurbish existing lines or install new ones to greatly improve the performance of your plumbing system for both commercial and residential plumbing systems. NoProblemPlumbing&Drain is your one-stop-shop for all plumbing needs, with tried and tested plumbing professionals that are focused on the needs of our clients and strive to provide fast and reliable service no matter the time of day, we are confident that you will be in the best hands in the industry.
