How to keep tankless water heater from freezing

Prevention of the freezing of your tankless system could be done in the following ways;

Insulate the plumbing.

To prevent you water heater freezing especially during winter or any cold season, it is very important to insulate not only the water heater but also the pipes. Pipes situated outdoors, along exterior walls and uninsulated basements and the most prone to freezing. During winter, your pipes are at risk from extremely low temperatures. Insulation could be done using the following materials: fiberglass, heat tape or also polyethylene insulation. To do this, install low voltage pipe that normally heats the wire in spiral pattern along the pipes that drain into the tankless water heater. No matter how small, water can collect and freeze inside the unit. The ice that forms can damage the plastic components inside the unit. This could be prevented by draining the unit especially when you are going for a prolonged period of time. It is also important to isolate the water to the heater, this is done by the use of valves located on the hot and the cold side of the lines.

Maintaining a constant Power Source.

It is important to consistently stay connected to electricity or to any other power source to ensure the freeze protection system operates in the required way. This does not mean that the water heater needs to be necessarily on but rater plugged in. This could be disadvantageous in areas that have frequently power outages, in such cases, either a battery backup system or drain down solenoids should be used.

Low water flow prevention method

In some situations, the temperature is beyond the units ability to protect itself from freezing. In such cases it may be necessary to run a considerable low amount of water through to the tankless unit to prevent it from freezing. Moreover, this. Method could come in handy in places which experience power loss. By so doing this could prevent the external piping from freezing. However, this method is not recommended for use during prolonged periods of time such as business trips, vacations, holidays etc.

Placement of ceramic heaters located on the heat exchange and other internal parts and water lines.

The mechanism employed here is that when the temperatures drops to as low twenty five degrees Celsius, the ceramic heaters fire up and therefore preventing the internal parts from freezing. We should not ignore chances of failure of the ceramic heaters or the temperature dropping too fast. When this happens, a secondary freeze protection method is employed. This secondary prevention method should be built in. Immediately the sensor inside the unit detects the tankless water heater is freezing below, it will automatically turn the unit on for a few seconds until the water inside reaches approximately fifty seven degrees. This process continues on and off until the threat of freezing has past.

Installing the freeze protection solenoid valve.

Installing the freeze protection solenoid valve on the outdoor unit is an amazing way to protect your water heating system against freezing. The freeze protection valve is also called the drain down valve. These valves are designed to always open. Sometimes these valves are referred to as “normally open” drain down solenoid valves: this is because they require an electric current to keep them closed.  In case there is power failure, these valves will open automatically and discharge the water that was contained inside the unit.
